I made this painting when I was at an artist residency and I was going through a particularly difficult time. I kept having this image in my head of a former neighbor resting with the donkey’s he watched over.
I was living in a rural area of northern Namibia, staying in a community of small adjacent farms and I'd go running everyday. There was a young boy who always sat outside his compound, looking after his donkeys. His household had gone through tragedy, losing 3 family members in just a few months. This small boy was always outside and alone but he had his donkeys. They had a special communion, he was responsible for their well being. He taught me about them and how to herd them, what they needed. They relied on each other. The thing was, they weren’t regular donkeys. Previous donkeys bred with wild zebras and this boy’s herd were zedonks. Half zebras and half donkeys. I loved that he found so much comfort and support from these very special animals.
Fast forward to my residency as I was going through my own time of pain. I had the image in my head of my old friend leaning on his zedonks and finding solace through that communion. This thought brought me so much comfort and I painted “The Flood” as a tribute to him and also as gift to myself creating what I needed most at the time, support, peace and community.
